It is forgotten by most, especially in Australia where he justifiably remains a legend, that Larry Perkins was a member of the TWR Jaguar team of drivers at Le Mans in 1988 when Jaguar won for the first time since 1957.
Indeed, he came home 4th outright, the second Jaguar, with Derek Daly and Kevin Cogan. In our next edition we have a very personal feature on Larry because were were there and covered the event back then – and concentrated our cameras and focus heavily on him.
His father too was famous as a rally driver, and of course his son too is successful, but most people recognise Larry for his driving and team ownership success in V8 saloon car racing – and that includes his many race victories at Bathurst.
However, it is almost beyond memory for most that Larry was initially a Formula Ford champion in Australia, the first F3 Champion in Britain – and one of very very few Australian F1 drivers.
It is all going to be covered in our next edition – but the Le Mans bit is best for us. Not even Larry has seen our unique images!!!
It’s all in edition #190:
