Just two years ago, thanks to Clive Beecham, owner of the D-Type which finished second at Le Mans in 1957, former Jaguar and Ecurie Ecosse engineer Ron Gaudion burst into international recognition.

Ron is the only person to have fettled, and crewed the 1955, 56 and 57 Le Mans D-Types – despite being a young Aussie from Melbourne who went to Britain to gain experience.

He even built two of those winning cars in the Experimental and Competition workshops at Browns Lane.

Today he and his Scottish-born wife (they met when he was with Ecurie Ecosse in Edinburgh) celebrated Ron’s 90th birthday at a huge luncheon organised by their daughter Linda. Her parents had no idea about the size of the function, and were stunned when 80 friends assembled at a Greg Norman golf course venue on the Queensland Gold Coast.

Ron’s very best friend came from Hobart in Tasmania despite being quite unwell – but delivered Ron an hilarious roast at the microphone and which brought the house down!

Ron and May are as fit as fleas, and the emotional day was a sensation. I am sure they are kicking back right now enjoying the very special chocolates sent to them by chocolate manufacturer Clive Beecham who knew Ron loves good chocolate.

Happy birthday from us to the delightful and ultra modest Jaguar and Ecurie Ecosse legend.
