JAGUAR’S STUNNING NEW DESIGN STUDIO

Jaguar has unveiled its new dedicated design studio in Gaydon, bringing the entire design team into one purpose-built creative space for the first time in the marque’s 84-year history.

Led by Jaguar Design Director, Julian Thomson, the new studio is the most advanced automotive design centre in the world, developed to enhance the human creative design process with world-leading technologies.

The ‘Heart Space’, a collaborative hub at the centre of the new Jaguar Design Studio, will bring together the diverse and creative 280-strong team as it designs future generations of Jaguars.

Surrounding the Heart Space are bespoke working environments for the Interior, Exterior and Colour and Materials teams, plus Design Visualisation and Design Technical disciplines.

Jaguar Design is made up of designers from across the globe and from a range of industry backgrounds, including fashion, watch-making, sports and gaming. Being drawn from such different spheres of design helps the team deliver its ‘Jaguar’ interpretation of Britishness using contemporary materials and processes. Those processes utilise industry-leading technology, including custom-made clay modelling machines allowing 20 models to be worked on at once, virtual reality (VR) systems and an 11-metre 4K digital display wall known as ‘The Electric’. The floor area of the new Jaguar Design Studio measures over 12,000m2 – an increase of around 33% of the total previous studio spaces based in Whitley.

Julian Thomson, Design Director, Jaguar, said: “Jaguar has a unique heritage as a design-led brand and this will always to be a central pillar of our DNA. The design values and philosophy that were created by Jaguar’s founder, Sir William Lyons, remain the same and this building will allow us to design the very best cars for our customers, far into the future. In the design team, we understand the issues that are facing the automotive industry and can respond accordingly through innovation and creativity.”

Full details are going to be revealed in our 200th edition.

WHAT IS COMING FOR OUR 200TH?

The enigmatic Briggs Cunningham achieved so much – when he could afford to do nothing!

That’s a good question! We know what the features will be – but how do you celebrate a huge milestone like this which has been 35 years in the making?

There will be some nostalgia, well know characters who have featured in that time and massive events headed by Jaguar’s win at Le Mans in 1988 – its first win as a factory effort since 1955.

Jan Lammers led the Jaguar victory parade under the flag at the end of the 24 hours that year, with the TWR Silk Cut team cars following in 4th and 16th places.

Then of course, there are the fabulous Jaguar of the road, racing, chassis and modern types.

Whatever we turn up, it is going to be big, but not self-congratulating! We want it to be entertaining and enlightening for readers.

I can promise thought I thought in 1984 when we began that we would have said everything in 20 editions and then be scratching for stories! Wrong – and that is because Jaguar is a living and breathing marque making modern history while celebrating its earlier times.

This image then is a little teaser – one of the nicest, most self-effacing and gracious huge achievers I have met and spent time with for Jaguar Magazine. Briggs Cunningham.

JAGUAR CONFIRMS ALL ELECTRIC XJ COMING – AT FRANKFURT

Jaguar announced at the ongoing Frankfurt Motor Show that the next generation of the XJ luxury saloon will be launched as an all-electric car. The British automobile manufacturer also gave a sneak peek of what the car will look like.

The XJ all-electric will be developed to compete against Tesla’s Model S and the recently showcased BMW EQS. The all-electric XJ is expected to borrow its powertrain from the company’s first all-electric model, the I-PACE.

Jaguar has equipped the I-PACE with one motor on each axle. This will make a combined output of 400 PS of maximum power and 696 Nm of peak torque giving the car a 0-100 km/h time of 4.8 seconds and a top speed over 200 km/h. The current-gen XJ is equipped with a 3-litre, V6 diesel engine which makes 305 PS of maximum power and 689 Nm of peak torque.

The company also gave a glimpse of the upcoming all-electric saloon, which indicates that the car will get a complete overhaul for its new generation. It is also expected that the car will receive connected tail lamps among other updates.

Jaguar Land Rover is gearing up for the launch of a hybrid SUV under the Land Rover lineup.
