Mitch Evans has targeted scoring Jaguar’s first Formula E victory after a charging drive in last weekend’s Punta del Este race.

Evans finished fourth after being demoted to 16th on the grid for an incorrect weight distribution on one of his cars, which followed a battery change between the two practice sessions in Uruguay.

He eventually finished just four seconds off the lead after battling his way up the order.

“The new battery was 3kg lighter but it was a 300g thing [that led to the incorrect weight distribution],” Evans, who scored Jaguar’s only Formula E podium to date at the Hong Kong season opener, told Autosport.

“It wasn’t an advantage but the rules are the rules, and I respect the stewards being consistent with it. We can’t argue with it – that’s the way it rolls.

“We had a good fast car, and I’m happy to be heading to the next few races hopefully in a position to fight for the win.

“I heard just before the drivers’ parade that we were disqualified, which is never something you want to hear after a good qualifying.

“Starting 16th wasn’t anywhere near where we should have been – obviously we weren’t within the rules, but not intentionally so. It was a very small margin.”

The race featured a tense battle for victory between Techeetah’s Jean-Eric Vergne and Audi Sport driver Lucas di Grassi, but the only lead change occurred when the frontrunners came in to pit and were briefly passed by cars running a longer first stint.

But Evans made up 12 positions on his charge, which included a dramatic swoop on Mahindra driver Felix Rosenqvist for what turned out to be fourth at the track’s high-speed Turn 13 right-hander.

When asked if he expected to get as far as he did, Evans said: “Not today, to be honest.

“Other circuits are easier to pass on, such as Santiago and maybe Mexico. It was tricky so I wasn’t expecting a top-four finish.

“But when the car’s quick, and I think I gelled well with the circuit, you can really make some good progress and that’s what we were able to achieve today.

“Obviously the guys at the front, the speed difference is very small. And we all know that JEV is one of the hardest guys to pass.”

I totally believe we know the truth about the identities of the 1984-built TWR XJ-Ss more than any other authority, and now one of those three cars also raced in 1985 is being offered for sale in the UK by JD Classics.  We knew this car at Bathurst because we were established as a magazine and reported from the TWR JRA Jaguar pits.

Most of those four 1984 TWR XJ-Ss today are now known by the wrong ID plates, but not this one.  It is chassis 005 and has been owned for several decades by UK fine car sales and service business JD Classics.

According to what has just been published:

One of the TWR-Jaguar works cars contended during the 1984 racing season, driven by Win Percy and Chuck Nicholson, this big cat holds the claim as Chassis No.5. This may not mean much to those unaware of the TWR heritage, but No.5 is the newest of all the works cars, having been finished in mid-September that year, replacing the XJ-S written off by Nicholson at the Silverstone Tourist Trophy a month before. 

“It debuted for the 3.5 hour race at Zolder – held on September 23, 1984. It was during this race that Tom Walkinshaw secured the Championship with a sister car, taking 3rd place. 

“The next appearance for No.5 occurred on October 25, racing at Mugello with Martin Brundle at the helm. 

“For 1985, the Jaguar was shipped to Australia to form a three-car TWR team, racing at Bathurst’s renowned Mount Panorama circuit. It was here that Jeff Allam and Ron Dickson appeared poised to claim a podium finish, until damage to the inlet system, apparently caused by broken headlamp glass (untrue – Jaguar Magazine), sent them down the order (Jaguar Magazine – that is, out on lap three) …

“Chassis No.5 then tore up the tarmac in Fuji for the All Japan Touring Car Championship. By now Win Percy had become the de facto lead driver, but Tom Walkinshaw himself also took position as driver for the tyre abusing mayhem. Percy and Walkinshaw were then paired with the XJ-S for the first round of the New Zealand Group A Saloon Championship in 1987. 

“Round two was undertaken at Pukekohe on February 1 and, in what would turn out to be the last race for the TWR XJ-S competition vehicles, Percy and Armin Hahne charged into 2nd place. 


“Sound good? We certainly performed a double take upon finding its glorious bulk on the JD Classics showroom floor. Now offered fully prepared for the next racing season and mated to a monumental history file, this is an incredibly rare opportunity to get your hands on the last TWR-Jaguar works XJ-S. The final one to be campaigned in period, this Jaguar would make for the perfect classic to fill that empty void in your garage and your heart.”

No, it is not Mike Roddy’s precious Spa and Bathurst winner which is the most untouched TWR XJ-S of any.

The fastest and most powerful Lister car ever created will be showcased on the ‘Built In Britain’ feature at The London Motor Show.

The 666bhp Lister supercar, which is based on the Jaguar F-Type SVR, will power its way on to the unique feature piece at this year’s show, which is demonstrating the sheer might of the British automotive industry.

The 5.0-litre Supercharged V8 Lister Coupé goes from 0-100mph in just 6.8 seconds and has a top speed of 208mph. Only 99 models are set to be produced, all coming with bespoke body packages, interior enhancements and suspension and exhaust upgrades.

It will be joined by the Lister Knobbly – a road-legal continuation model of the legendary racer driven by some of the most notable racing drivers of the 50s including Archie Scott Brown, Sir Stirling Moss, Ivor Beub, Bruce Halford and Innes Ireland. 1957 was a truly definitive maiden season for the car winning 12 of the 14 races that year, including the prestigious British Empire Cup.

Lister remains, to this day, unique in being the only automotive company making original specification continuation cars that are eligible for registration and road use. Unlike other continuation specials, which are strictly limited to track use only, the road-legal Lister Knobbly is fully eligible for IVA type approval.

A true testament to the UK’s motorsport pedigree and British ingenuity, Lister was one of the most successful and prestigious sports racing cars of the 1950s, winning at almost every UK circuit in Britain and virtually unbeatable both in the UK, overseas and in the USA; illustrating the British manufacturer’s prowess in the motorsport world. The UK remains at the forefront of the motorsport world to this day, with the high performance and motorsport engineering industry housing approximately 4,500 companies and boasting an annual turnover of £9 billion. On what you say?  Well, Martin took himself to Donington Park race circuit this week where the new Invictus Jaguar F-Type GT racer appeared in public for the first time and ran serious laps of the fast historic circuit.

Martin reported it ran well, and seemed to have little time off the track for attention.

It is early days, of course, but the car looks stunning in action – and who knows what it could lead to?

Of course, we will all love the deep V8 rumble coming from those four huge exhaust pipes …
